WASHINGTON – Cutting a campaign ad for daughter and embattled Republican lawmaker Liz Cheney, former Vice President Dick Cheney blistered ex-President Donald Trump on Thursday as a threat to the nation's future.
“In our nation’s 246-year history, there has never been an individual who is a greater threat to our Republic than Donald Trump,” the former vice president said in an extraordinary attack on a former president from the same party.
Cheney, an underdog in her reelection bid against Trump-backed challenger Harriet Hageman, has described the ex-president in similar terms during her stint on the special congressional committee investigating the insurrection of Jan. 6, 2021.
Liz Cheney's case: ‘Domestic threat:' Liz Cheney says Republicans must abandon Donald Trump
During a series of hearings, Cheney and other committee members have accused Trump of orchestrating the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol in an effort to illegally overturn his election loss to President Joe Biden.
In the ad, the elder Cheney said Trump knows he lost the election and accused him of lying to supporters about false claims of voter fraud. He called Trump “a coward” and said that “a real man wouldn't lie to his supporters.”
The ex-vice president also suggested his daughter's work on the investigation is in part an effort to prevent Trump from winning the presidency again in the 2024 election.
“There is nothing more important she will ever do than lead the effort to make sure Donald Trump is never again near the Oval Office,” Cheney said in the ad. “And she will succeed.”
The Republican primary in Wyoming is Aug. 16.
Trump has attacked Bush, Cheney
Trump has for years attacked Dick Cheney and ex-President George W. Bush on issues ranging from free trade to the invasion of Iraq.
Tim Murtaugh, a political adviser to Hageman, said the Cheney ad is designed to appeal only to donors who might fund her “fever dream” of running for president herself.
“Voters know that she’s abandoned her job of representing Wyoming and instead is pursuing her own personal war with Donald Trump,” Murtaugh said. “It’s why people are fed up with her, and this ad just reinforces that point.”
